Joint Statement of Solidarity to the Community of Boeung Kak Lake from Timor-Leste Civil Society
The Rede ba Rai (Land Network), our members and the NGO Forum of Timor-Leste would like to express our solidarity to the community of Boeung Kak Lake in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, who have stood strong over many years to defend their human right to housing. We express in particular our solidarity to our 15 sisters who this week have been arrested and sentenced in a manner that is clearly a grave offense to their human rights.
The right to housing is a fundamental human right. Everyday we see the terrible impact that evictions can have on our own communities here in Timor-Leste. Over the past few years the community of Boeung Kak Lake have led us all by example as the bravest of housing rights defenders. All of our thoughts and prayers are with you that you may yet find some just solution against the injustices which you currently face.
We hope that our fellow activists and human rights defenders will follow this example and sign the open letter to the world bank (see below) asking them not to support the Government of Cambodia who continue to carry out injustices upon their people and deny many Cambodians the fundamental right to a house, a home and a life.
To the community of Boeung Kak Lake we shout a heartfelt
Viva Boeung Kak Lake!!
Free the 15!
A luta kontinua!!
